Season 1: The Crimson Plague - The Definitive Guide

5 min read

Welcome to the apocalypse, Commander. If you thought the base game was a grind, Season 1 (“The Crimson Plague” or “Genetic War”) is here to humble you. The zombies are stronger, the map is bigger, and there’s a new stat that matters more than your power level: Virus Resistance.

This guide is your roadmap to surviving the infection, dominating the leaderboards, and not wasting your wallet on useless packs.

The One Stat That Matters: Virus Resistance

Forget your troop power. Forget your hero levels. In Season 1, Virus Resistance is God.

If your Resistance is lower than the zombie’s Virus Level, you suffer a massive debuff—up to 99% damage reduction. You will do zero damage and your troops will die instantly.

How to Increase Resistance

Your Bible for the next 8 weeks is the Virus Research Institute (VRI).

  1. Protein Farms: Produce Immune Protein.
  2. Genetic Recombination: Produces Mutant Crystals.
  3. VRI Upgrade: Costs Protein + Crystals = Higher Resistance.

The Loop: Harvest Protein ➡️ Recombine for Crystals ➡️ Upgrade VRI ➡️ Kill Higher Lvl Zombies ➡️ Get More Crystals ➡️ Upgrade Farms.

Speedrun Tactics: Profession & Tech

1. The Profession Meta: Engineer vs. War Leader

Don’t get cute. Unless you are a mega-whale (maxed base, T10 troops), pick Engineer.

  • Engineer (90% of Players):
    • Why: You need resources to upgrade your VRI and Farms. Engineer gives Resource Cost Reduction (-5%) and Build Speed.
    • Speedrun Skill: “Rapid Production” speeds up your Protein Farms.
  • War Leader (Whales Only):
    • Why: Pure combat stats. Only useful if you are already capped on tech and just want to bully people in PvP.
    • Strategy: Start as Engineer, swap to War Leader in Week 5+ for the final battles (requires a Profession Change item).

2. The Tech Rush Order

Do not auto-upgrade. Prioritize in this exact order:

  1. Virus Research Institute (VRI): Priority #1. Always.
  2. Protein Farms: Upgrade these evenly. Leveling Farm 1 to 20 is more expensive than leveling Farms 2-5 to 10.
  3. Military Bases (Week 3): These unlock massive stats for your main squad (Tank/Air/Missile). Only touch these after your VRI is on track.

Genetic Recombination: The “Sunday Strategy”

This is the secret sauce for F2P and low spenders.

The Mechanic: You combine 6 different Gene Fragments (I-VI) to get a chest of Mutant Crystals.

  • Fragments I-III: Get these from killing zombies/radar tasks.
  • Fragments IV-VI: Get these from healing allies. (Spam that help button!)

The Speedrun Trick: The rewards for Recombination increase every week.

  • Don’t use your recombinations on Monday-Saturday.
  • Hoard them until Sunday (Server Reset).
  • Why? You will get the next week’s higher reward tier for all your saved attempts.
  • Cap Warning: You can only store 30 recombinations. Don’t let it cap out!

Wallet Guide: What to Buy

Season 1 is a spending trap. Here is the value analysis so you don’t waste money.

👑 S-Tier (Must Haves)

  • Kimberly’s Exclusive Weapon ($1): “Rocket Shadow”. If you main tanks, this is non-negotiable. It defines the meta.
  • Weekly Pass ($5-7):
    • Unlocks the 5th Protein Farm.
    • Increases Resistance Cap to 10,250 (vs 10k free).
    • If you want to be competitive, you need this for the extra farm alone.
  • Battle Pass (Advanced ~$12): The sheer amount of Mutant Crystals here accelerates your VRI by weeks.

🗑️ F-Tier (Skip)

  • Luxury Battle Pass: Unless you plan to swap professions (it gives the change item), the extra cosmetics aren’t worth the price hike.
  • Random Resource Packs: The value is terrible compared to the Battle Pass.

Infection Mechanics

You will get infected. It happens.

  • Stacks 0-100:
    • 20+: Damage -5%.
    • 40+: Troops die faster.
    • 100: BOOM. Your base explodes, damaging neighbors and spreading the virus.
  • The Cure: Ask allies to heal you. It costs them 1 Protein, but they get a Gene Fragment. Win-Win.

The “Rat” Strategy (For Low Resistance)

Can’t damage the boss because your Resistance is too low?

  1. Create a squad with 1 Hero (your lowest Command stat).
  2. Put 1 Soldier in it.
  3. Join a rally started by a high-resistance whale.
  4. Result: You get the full rewards, the whale does the damage, and you lose practically zero troops.

📅 Season Timeline

  • Week 1:
    • Day 1: VRI Unlocks. Build it immediately.
    • Day 3: Genetic Recombination starts. Start hoarding!
    • Day 4: Level 1 Cities open.
  • Week 3:
    • Military Bases unlock (Requires VRI Lvl 30).
    • Warzone Expeditions: Cross-server map opens.
  • Week 4:
    • City Declaration Event: The real war begins.
  • Week 8:
    • Settlement: Rewards distributed based on Influence Points.

Good luck, Commander. Watch your Resistance, trust your Engineer, and for the love of god, don’t let your infection hit 100.
